Former Super Eagles and Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo has shared a heartfelt message with two young players from his Lagos-based football academy after they secured their first professional contracts in Europe.
Speaking during a send-off for the players, Ighalo reflected on his own career journey, urging the youngsters to remain focused, disciplined and financially wise as they begin life in European football. He stressed that while Europe is often viewed as the ultimate destination for aspiring footballers, long-term success should be measured by how a career ends rather than where it begins.
Recalling his own experience, Ighalo said:
“I played in Europe for 10 years, but I didn’t make the money I made in just three years in China.”
He encouraged the academy graduates not to become fixated on the prestige of playing in Europe’s biggest leagues, adding that football careers are short and financial stability should remain a priority.
“It’s not about where you play; it’s about how you finish your career.”
Ighalo’s remarks have sparked widespread discussion on social media. Many fans praised the former striker for offering practical advice, arguing that players from modest backgrounds should prioritize financial security and making the most of their limited playing years.
Others, however, maintained that young footballers should first focus on developing in Europe’s top leagues before pursuing lucrative contracts elsewhere, believing elite competition ultimately enhances both career prospects and earning potential.
The former Nigeria international built his reputation in Norway, Italy, Spain and England before moving to the Chinese Super League in 2017. He later fulfilled a lifelong dream by joining Manchester United on loan before continuing his career in Saudi Arabia.
His message to the academy players reflects lessons drawn from nearly two decades in professional football and highlights the difficult balance between sporting ambition and financial security faced by many young African footballers.
