English football is set to trial new rules in the 2026-27 season to stop goalkeepers from using injury time-outs to slow the game down, break the opposition’s momentum, or get tactical instructions from the bench.
The move, backed by Pro Ref, the FA, Premier League, EFL, WSL and National League, still needs IFAB approval before it can be introduced.
A step aimed at making the game faster and reducing time-wasting.
