Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, plans to donate one-third of his fortune to charitable causes as part of a long-term succession strategy designed to preserve his philanthropic legacy for generations. The revelation was made by his daughter, Halima Dangote, a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, during an interview with Bloomberg.
According to Halima, Dangote has already transferred 25% of his wealth to the Aliko Dangote Foundation and has secured the approval of his family to dedicate up to 33% of his estate to philanthropy, in line with Islamic Sharia inheritance principles. Based on Bloomberg’s estimate of his fortune at $35.1 billion, the charitable commitment could be worth approximately $11.7 billion.
The Aliko Dangote Foundation, established in 1994, has become one of Africa’s largest philanthropic organizations, focusing primarily on health, education, nutrition, poverty alleviation and humanitarian support across Nigeria and the continent. Halima said the arrangement was deliberately structured to ensure the foundation’s work continues long after the billionaire businessman is gone.
The pledge ranks among the largest charitable commitments ever announced by an African billionaire and comes as Dangote continues expanding his business empire while formalizing plans for the next generation of family leadership
