Real Madrid may be starting the new season with a center-back partnership that tells us more about José Mourinho’s plans than simply who is fit enough to play.
Dean Huijsen and Ibrahima Konaté are emerging as the leading pair for the opening games, with Antonio Rüdiger potentially starting on the bench. The combination is especially interesting because it mixes Huijsen’s composure on the ball with Konaté’s physical strength and aerial ability. Recent reports have identified the two as a partnership Mourinho is increasingly interested in.
It is also no longer just speculation. In Real Madrid’s final pre-season friendly against Schalke, Konaté started alongside Huijsen, with Rüdiger replacing him at half-time.
Why Huijsen Has Forced His Way Into the Conversation
Huijsen has been given the No. 4 shirt and is entering his second season at Madrid with much higher expectations.
The 21-year-old defender has impressed during pre-season and appears to have gained Mourinho’s trust. His biggest advantage is that he offers something different from Konaté. Rather than relying mainly on physical strength, Huijsen is comfortable carrying the ball forward and playing through pressure.
That could make the partnership particularly useful for Mourinho. Konaté can deal with physical battles and aerial threats, while Huijsen can help Madrid build from the back.
Konaté Has Arrived at the Perfect Time
Konaté joined Madrid from Liverpool on a free transfer, signing a four-year contract until 2030. His arrival was supposed to strengthen a defense that suffered badly from injuries last season.
But injuries to Éder Militão and Raúl Asencio have made his introduction even more important. Madrid currently have only Huijsen, Konaté and Rüdiger as experienced first-team centre-back options for the start of the campaign.
That means Konaté is not simply competing for a place. He is one of the players Mourinho needs to get right immediately.
What Happens to Rüdiger?
This is where the story gets interesting. Rüdiger remains an important player and recently extended his contract until 2027.
However, his position is no longer completely secure. If Mourinho decides that Huijsen and Konaté give him the best balance, Rüdiger could become more of a rotation option, particularly while Madrid’s younger defenders develop.
That would represent a major shift for a player who has been one of the club’s most trusted defenders.
The Partnership Still Has Questions
The Huijsen-Konaté pairing looks promising, but it is not perfect. Both players are still adjusting to Mourinho’s system, and Huijsen has previously shown that his performances can fluctuate. In the Schalke friendly, he scored but also made some defensive errors.
There is also the question of experience. Rüdiger has played at the highest level for years, while Huijsen is still establishing himself. Mourinho therefore has a difficult decision to make.
Does he choose experience, or does he trust the partnership that could potentially become Madrid’s defensive foundation for years?
For now, Huijsen and Konaté appear to have the momentum. If they can keep Madrid’s defence stable, Mourinho may have found a new centre-back partnership while quietly beginning the next era of the club’s back line.
