Liverpool’s interest in Paris Saint-Germain forwards Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye is beginning to look less like a simple search for another winger and more like a potential reshaping of the club’s entire forward line.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool remain in discussions with PSG over Barcola while also exploring Mbaye. However, PSG’s combined asking price is understood to be around €200 million, a figure Liverpool currently considers too high. Romano has also indicated that a deal for Mbaye is currently “off” because of the financial demands, while negotiations for Barcola remain alive.
That creates an interesting problem for Liverpool: how much of the attack are they actually prepared to change? The biggest potential domino is Cody Gakpo.
Tottenham remain interested in the Dutch forward, although Liverpool have not simply placed him on an automatic exit list. Any serious move for Gakpo could change the club’s calculations, particularly if Liverpool decide to pursue two new wide attackers.
And that is where Barcola and Mbaye become particularly interesting. Barcola would represent the major, immediate investment: a proven young forward who could compete for a starting role. Mbaye is a much more developmental bet, with Liverpool having already made contact with his representatives.
But spending close to €200 million on both would raise another question: is Liverpool rebuilding depth, or replacing established players?
If Gakpo leaves and both PSG forwards arrive, Liverpool would essentially be exchanging a proven Premier League attacker for two younger options while simultaneously reshaping the balance of the frontline.
There is also a financial reality. Liverpool have already invested heavily this summer, so PSG’s valuation gives the Reds an incentive to negotiate rather than simply accept the asking price. Reports suggest the club believes there is room for PSG to lower its demands.
That could make the next few weeks fascinating. Liverpool may not need to choose between Barcola, Mbaye and Gakpo immediately. But if Tottenham push seriously for Gakpo, PSG lower their price and Liverpool decide they want two new wingers, one transfer could trigger an entirely different attack by deadline day.
