Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa meet in Salzburg on Wednesday for the UEFA Super Cup, putting the reigning Champions League winners against the Europa League champions. On paper, PSG enter as the clear favorites. But the bigger question is not simply who lifts the trophy, is this the first warning sign of another PSG-dominated European season?
PSG are coming off a remarkable European campaign and have established themselves as the team everyone else now has to measure themselves against. That makes this match particularly interesting because Villa represent a very different kind of challenge.
Unai Emery’s side are unlikely to try to outplay PSG by simply matching their attacking talent. Their route to victory is more likely to involve compact defending, disciplined positioning and fast counter-attacks. Villa’s ability to survive PSG’s pressure could therefore tell us more about their readiness for another Champions League campaign than the final score itself.
For PSG, however, there is a different concern: how hungry are they for a trophy that comes immediately after their biggest European achievement?
The Super Cup is technically a major UEFA trophy, but it does not carry the same weight as the Champions League. PSG’s players have already reached the summit. The danger is that Villa could be more desperate to prove something while PSG treat the game as an extension of pre-season.
That is why the opening 20–30 minutes could be crucial. If PSG start aggressively and dominate possession, chances and territory, it could suggest that their winning mentality has survived the summer. If Villa frustrate them and repeatedly exploit space behind their defense, suddenly the narrative changes: perhaps PSG are still vulnerable despite being Europe’s reigning champions.
Villa also have something to gain beyond the trophy. Beating PSG would immediately give Emery’s team enormous confidence heading into the new season, particularly after losing important players and preparing for another demanding European campaign.
So this is more than Champions League winners versus Europa League winners. It is PSG’s first opportunity to prove they are still the team to beat and Villa’s chance to show that the gap between Europe’s elite and everyone else may not be as wide as it looks.
