Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have been overshadowed by reports that several Super Falcons players had cash stolen while staying at the team’s hotel in Casablanca, Morocco.
The allegations first surfaced after forward Esther Okoronkwo shared posts on social media claiming that money disappeared from players’ wallets while they were away from their hotel rooms. Okoronkwo initially said she had lost $500, but later clarified that the missing amount was $700 after recounting her cash. She also alleged that several teammates were affected by the incident.
According to reports, captain Rasheedat Ajibade allegedly lost $200, while Osinachi Ohale, Joy Omewa, and Halimatu Ayinde also reported missing cash, bringing the total alleged loss to more than $1,200. The players claimed the money went missing while housekeeping staff were cleaning their rooms, although those allegations have not been independently verified.
The team’s media officer confirmed that the matter has been reported to the relevant Moroccan authorities and that an investigation is underway. As of Saturday, neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Marriott Hotel Casablanca, nor the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had released an official statement on the allegations.
Despite the incident, the Super Falcons have continued their preparations for the tournament. The defending African champions recently defeated Tanzania 2-1 in a warm-up match and are expected to begin their WAFCON campaign against Malawi before facing Zambia and Egypt in the group stage.
The alleged theft has sparked concern among fans, with many hoping the investigation is concluded quickly so the players can focus fully on their quest for a record-extending 11th WAFCON title. Authorities are expected to provide further updates once inquiries into the reported incident are completed.
