October 7 Anniversary Protests: Global Demonstrations Demand Permanent Gaza Ceasefire

Cities around the world have seen October 7 anniversary protests as demonstrators mark three years since the Hamas-led attack on Israel and demand an end to the war in Gaza.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations and student rallies were reported in several countries on Wednesday, October 7, with protesters calling for a permanent Gaza ceasefire and an end to Israeli military operations in Gaza and the West Bank. The demonstrations show that the conflict remains a major international political issue three years after the events that triggered the war.

Why The Protests Matter Three Years Later

The October 7 protests around the world come at a particularly sensitive moment. The original Hamas attack killed about 1,200 people in Israel and resulted in 251 people being taken hostage, according to the United Nations. The Israeli military response that followed has caused enormous destruction and more than 74,000 reported Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The anniversary has therefore produced competing forms of remembrance. Israeli and Jewish communities have held vigils and memorial events for those killed and taken hostage, while pro-Palestinian activists have used the date to highlight the suffering caused by the war in Gaza.

Student Activism Takes Centre Stage

One of the clearest features of the student protests over Gaza on October 7 has been the involvement of university groups.

In London, students from several universities marched through central London despite police concerns about the timing of the demonstration. Five people were arrested in one protest after police said chants were being investigated as possible incitement of racial hatred. Further demonstrations were held at universities in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In New York, students from Columbia University and New York University also joined demonstrations. At NYU, protesters called for divestment from Israel and changes to the university’s relationship with its Tel Aviv campus.

The Anniversary Has Become A Global Political Test

The scale of the global protests for a Gaza ceasefire shows how the conflict has moved far beyond the Middle East. Demonstrations were planned across at least 37 countries, with hundreds of events scheduled around the anniversary period.

At the same time, governments and Jewish organisations have warned about rising antisemitism and the safety of Jewish communities. This has made the anniversary particularly tense, with some cities deploying additional police and placing restrictions around demonstrations.

The competing reactions also show how difficult it remains to create a shared international narrative about the conflict.

Calls For A Permanent Ceasefire Grow

The protests come as international pressure continues for the existing ceasefire arrangements to move towards a lasting settlement.

In a statement marking three years since the attack, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for the ceasefire to become permanent, humanitarian assistance to reach Gaza at scale and international law to be respected.

For protesters, that demand is now the central message of the anniversary. Whether governments can turn that pressure into a lasting political agreement remains the bigger question.

Three years after October 7, the demonstrations show that the conflict is still shaping streets, universities and political debate across the world.
