2027 Elections: Nigeria Voter Register Hits 103.4 Million as North-West Leads

2027 Nigeria voter register

Nigeria’s voter register has climbed to 103,428,715 registered voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, giving a clearer picture of the size and distribution of the electorate that will shape the next national polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the latest figures after completing three phases of Continuous Voter Registration and a final biometric cleanup. The updated register is almost 10 million larger than the register used for the 2023 elections.

North-West Remains the Biggest Voting Bloc

The North-West voter population in 2027 stands at 25,083,411, making it the largest geopolitical voting bloc in the country. It is followed by the South-West with 19,614,274 voters and North-Central with 16,965,787.

At state level, Lagos has the highest number of registered voters with 7,488,633, followed by Kano with 6,570,276 and Kaduna with 4,662,640.

The numbers show that Nigeria’s electoral map continues to be heavily shaped by its most populous regions and states. But the figures alone do not determine turnout or how voters will cast their ballots.

Young and Middle-Aged Voters Dominate

Another important part of the 2027 Nigeria voter register is its age profile. Voters aged 35 to 49 make up the largest group, with 43,265,946 people, representing 41.83 per cent of the register. Those aged 18 to 34 account for another 29,777,576 voters, or 28.79 per cent.

Together, voters aged 18 to 49 account for more than 73 million registered voters. That makes younger and middle-aged Nigerians a major part of the electorate heading into 2027. Political parties will have to pay attention to this demographic as campaigns develop, although the register itself does not indicate which parties or candidates these voters support.

The Next Test Is PVC Collection

Registration is only one part of the process. INEC says nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards will begin on October 9, 2026, while the voters’ register will also be displayed for public scrutiny so citizens can raise claims and objections.

This creates the next major test for the 2027 elections: ensuring that people who registered actually collect their PVCs and can use them on election day.

INEC has also announced the acquisition of 57,000 new BVAS devices as part of preparations for the polls, which are scheduled for January 16 and February 6, 2027.

With about 100 days to the election, Nigeria now has a much clearer picture of who is registered and where the voters are concentrated. The bigger story from here will be whether the huge register translates into strong participation at the polling units.
