The FIFA and CAF suspend NFF elections 2026 decision has put Nigeria’s football leadership race on hold as the two governing bodies begin a deeper review of the crisis inside the Nigeria Football Federation.
FIFA and the Confederation of African Football have ordered the NFF to take no further steps in its electoral process. The directive affects the elective congress planned for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
But the bigger story is not simply the delayed election. FIFA and CAF are now preparing to send a joint assessment mission to Abuja to examine the legal, administrative, governance and electoral issues behind the crisis.
Why the NFF Election Was Suspended
The NFF election suspended September 2026 follows a wave of resignations that has left the federation’s leadership in uncertainty.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and several Executive Committee members resigned in August. The leadership shake-up prompted the federation to halt its electoral preparations while interim arrangements were put in place.
FIFA and CAF are now reviewing the circumstances surrounding those resignations, as well as communications they received from different Nigerian football stakeholders.
The organisations also held a meeting in Zurich on September 1 involving FIFA, CAF, the NFF administration and representatives of the Federal Government.
Abuja Mission Could Shape the Next Leadership
The planned FIFA-CAF-NFF joint assessment mission could become the most important next step in the crisis.
The delegation is expected to meet NFF officials, members of the federation, electoral bodies and representatives of the National Sports Commission. The aim is to hear different sides of the dispute and establish what happened before deciding what should happen next.
This means the September 27 election is unlikely to simply resume on a new date without changes. FIFA and CAF want to assess the rules, governance arrangements and electoral process before the NFF moves forward.
No Sanction Has Been Announced
The intervention does not currently mean Nigeria has been suspended from international football. FIFA and CAF have specifically said they have reached no conclusions and have made no decision on possible next steps. Their immediate request is to preserve the status quo while the assessment continues.
That distinction is important because the outcome could range from recommendations for reform to changes in how the electoral process is conducted. For Nigerian football, the real question now is whether the FIFA and CAF intervention can produce a more stable leadership structure. The answer may become clearer after the Abuja mission and the completion of the international assessment.
