Chelsea have moved quickly to protect one of the biggest successes of their recent rebuild, with João Pedro signing a new Chelsea contract until 2034 after just one full season at Stamford Bridge.
The 24-year-old Brazilian arrived from Brighton in July 2025 for an initial £55 million plus £5 million in potential add-ons. He then delivered exactly the kind of first season Chelsea wanted, scoring 20 goals in all competitions and finishing as the club’s Supporters’ Player of the Season.
The new deal is more than a reward for a good season. It is Chelsea making a clear statement that João Pedro is part of the club’s long-term attacking plans.
From New Signing to Chelsea’s No. 9
João Pedro’s first season could hardly have gone better. He made an immediate impact during Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph, scoring in both the semi-final and final. He then became the club’s leading scorer during the 2025/26 campaign with 20 goals.
His numbers become even more impressive because those 20 goals came without penalties. That made him the first Chelsea forward since Diego Costa to reach 20 goals in a season without relying on spot kicks.
Now, he has also been handed Chelsea’s iconic No. 9 shirt, replacing the number he wore during his first season. That combination of performances, recognition and a new contract shows how quickly his status has changed.
Chelsea Are Protecting Their Investment
The timing of the João Pedro contract extension is also important. Chelsea have invested heavily in young players and have regularly used long-term contracts to protect their most valuable assets. Pedro’s new agreement follows the same strategy, but this time the club is rewarding a player who has already proved himself in the Premier League.
There had also been interest from other major European clubs, making the new contract another way for Chelsea to remove uncertainty around one of their most important attackers.
Instead of waiting for his value to rise further and allowing speculation to grow, Chelsea have effectively told the market that João Pedro is not someone they intend to lose easily.
João Pedro Wants to Be Part of the Project
The player himself appears equally committed. Speaking after signing the new deal, João Pedro said: “I have always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to give my long-term commitment to this club.”
He also pointed to Chelsea’s history and ambitions, saying: “Chelsea has a long tradition of winning and it has big ambitions for the future.” That belief will now be tested.
Chelsea have spent heavily on building a young squad, but the next challenge is turning potential into consistent Premier League and European success. João Pedro’s 20-goal season suggests he could be one of the players expected to lead that push.
The question is no longer whether he can make an impact at Chelsea. It is whether he can become the striker around whom the club builds its next successful era.
