Tinubu’s Return to UNGA Puts Nigeria’s Reforms Under the Global Spotlight

tinubu speak at unga

President Bola Tinubu is set to return to the United Nations General Assembly in person for the first time since 2023, with the Nigerian leader scheduled to address world leaders in New York on September 23, 2026. He is expected to speak between 11:30 a.m. and noon New York time, or 4:30 p.m. Nigerian time.

The timing makes the appearance more significant than a routine presidential speech. Tinubu will be speaking at a time when his administration has spent more than three years pushing major economic reforms, while Nigerians continue to deal with the effects of those policies. His appearance therefore gives him an opportunity to present Nigeria’s progress directly to international investors, governments and institutions.

This Time, Tinubu Has More to Prove

Tinubu personally attended the 2023 UN General Assembly. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria in 2024 and 2025, making this year’s return a notable diplomatic appearance. The president is expected to use the gathering to discuss Nigeria’s reforms and attract international support and investment.

That could be particularly important because the administration has spent years trying to convince international investors that Nigeria’s difficult reforms will eventually produce a stronger economy.

The UN platform gives Tinubu a chance to make that case directly. But the speech will also be judged against what Nigerians are experiencing at home.

Security Could Be One of Nigeria’s Biggest Talking Points

One issue likely to receive attention is regional security. Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, said the country is working with the United Nations on a regional border-policing initiative. Nigeria wants broader international support for tackling West Africa’s porous borders, which remain a major security concern.

That could give Tinubu an opportunity to position Nigeria not simply as a country asking for assistance, but as a regional power trying to lead solutions to West Africa’s security problems.

Climate and Health Will Also Be on the Table

Tinubu is expected to participate in high-level meetings covering climate action, sea-level rise and pandemic preparedness. He is also expected to meet outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres before Guterres leaves office at the end of 2026.

For Nigeria, these discussions matter beyond diplomacy. Climate change is already affecting agriculture, flooding and coastal communities, while pandemic preparedness remains important for a country with a large and rapidly growing population.

Could Trump Meeting Happen?

There is also a potentially important meeting on the sidelines. Nigeria’s UN ambassador said Tinubu could meet US President Donald Trump during the General Assembly. If that happens, it could give Nigeria another opportunity to strengthen its relationship with Washington on trade, security and investment.

Ultimately, Tinubu’s UNGA appearance will be about more than delivering a speech. He will be selling Nigeria’s story to the world. The real question is whether the international community will see the Nigeria his government presents in New York and the Nigeria Nigerians experience at home as the same country.
