Hull City have reached an agreement with Rayo Vallecano to sign highly rated Senegalese defender Nobel Mendy in a deal worth €20 million plus add-ons, as the club continues to strengthen ahead of the new Premier League season.
The 21-year-old left-footed centre-back is expected to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract with the Tigers. As part of the agreement, Real Betis, Mendy’s former club, will receive around €4 million through a sell-on clause negotiated when Rayo signed him permanently.
Mendy joined Rayo Vallecano after impressing on loan from Real Betis and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in La Liga. Standing at 1.87 metres, the defender earned praise for his composure on the ball, aerial ability and defensive awareness, performances that also earned him his first senior international cap for Senegal.
Hull’s move represents one of the club’s biggest transfer investments in recent years and underlines their ambition to strengthen defensively following promotion. Although Mendy’s market valuation had been estimated below the agreed fee, Hull’s hierarchy view the defender as a long-term investment with significant resale potential.
The transfer has generated excitement among Hull supporters, many of whom see the signing as a statement of intent ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Analysts have also pointed to Mendy’s age, physical profile and room for development as key reasons behind the sizeable fee.
If completed after his medical, Mendy will become one of Hull City’s marquee additions this summer as they prepare for the challenge of competing in England’s top flight.
