Manchester United Weigh Baleba and Koné as Search for Third Midfielder Intensifies

Manchester United are stepping up plans to sign a third midfielder this summer, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Roma’s Manu Koné emerging as the leading candidates as Michael Carrick continues his squad rebuild ahead of the 2026/27 season.

United have already strengthened their midfield by signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea and triggering Youri Tielemans’ release clause from Aston Villa. However, the club believes another addition is needed to add athleticism, defensive solidity and depth as they prepare for both the Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

Sky Sports reports that Baleba and Koné are now being strongly considered, although the club is taking different approaches to each deal. United have recently revisited a move for Baleba, but no official club-to-club contact has been made with Brighton. The Seagulls are expected to demand a significant fee for the 22-year-old, who is regarded as one of the Premier League’s most complete young midfielders.

Koné, meanwhile, is viewed as the more affordable alternative. The Roma midfielder has also been explored internally, with United impressed by his ball-carrying ability, defensive work rate and versatility. While neither player has become the outright priority, both remain high on the club’s shortlist as recruitment staff assess the best fit for Carrick’s system.

A notable development is that United are not rushing into the signing despite growing speculation. Club officials are also prioritizing reinforcements in other areas of the squad before deciding whether to make a formal move for another midfielder. That measured approach suggests United are determined to avoid overpaying in an inflated market while keeping multiple options open.

With more than a month remaining before the transfer window closes, United are expected to continue monitoring both players alongside other targets. Whether the club opts for Baleba’s Premier League experience or Koné’s value-for-money profile could depend on negotiations in the coming weeks.
