A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, June 8, causing widespread destruction across Mindanao and triggering tsunami warnings across parts of Southeast Asia. Authorities say the disaster has killed at least 37 people, injured hundreds more, and left tens of thousands displaced, with search and rescue operations still ongoing as of Tuesday morning.
The epicenter was located offshore near Sarangani province, with the strongest shaking hitting densely populated areas including General Santos City. Buildings collapsed, roads cracked, and critical infrastructure including schools, hospitals, and parts of the regional airport sustained serious damage. Entire neighborhoods were left without electricity and clean water as emergency crews rushed to restore basic services.
One of the deadliest impacts came from a landslide in Sarangani province, which buried homes and contributed significantly to the rising death toll. Officials also confirmed that multiple victims were killed in building collapses in both urban and rural areas, with rescue teams still searching through rubble for survivors.
The earthquake struck early in the morning, shortly before the start of the school day, when millions of students were either in transit or inside classrooms. Videos from affected schools showed terrified children evacuating as structures swayed violently. Authorities have since suspended classes across large parts of the region and ordered structural inspections of thousands of school buildings.
A brief tsunami warning was also issued for coastal areas of the Philippines and neighboring countries, but it was later lifted after only a minor wave activity was recorded. Strong aftershocks, some exceeding magnitude 6, have continued to shake the region.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of calamity in the worst-hit areas and mobilized national disaster agencies to support relief efforts. International partners, including Japan, the United States, and others, have offered assistance as emergency teams work around the clock to locate survivors and provide aid.
