The Football Association has reaffirmed its support for Thomas Tuchel, confirming the German will remain England manager despite the Three Lions’ 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. England’s campaign ended in Atlanta after Anthony Gordon gave them an early lead before late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez completed Argentina’s comeback.
Although England fell short of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966, the FA believes the team’s overall tournament performance justified keeping Tuchel in charge. England topped their group before eliminating DR Congo and Norway en route to the semi-finals, their deepest World Cup run in six decades. Tuchel, whose contract now runs through Euro 2028, has also made it clear he has no intention of stepping down.
The decision comes amid reports that Pep Guardiola had been the FA’s preferred choice before Tuchel’s appointment in 2024. According to reports, Guardiola reached a verbal agreement with the FA before deciding to remain at Manchester City, paving the way for Tuchel to take the England job instead.
While some supporters have questioned Tuchel’s defensive approach against Argentina, the FA believes continuity offers England the best chance of ending their trophy drought at Euro 2028. The manager has accepted responsibility for the semi-final defeat but insists the current squad is capable of taking the next step.
