The death toll from a deadly attack on Kawel village in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State has risen to 22, according to community leaders and emergency responders.
The attack reportedly occurred late Sunday night in Mushere District, when armed assailants invaded the community and opened fire on residents. Several civilians, health workers, patients, and security personnel were among those killed during the assault.
Residents said the attackers targeted the community’s Primary Health Care Centre, where some victims were caught during the violence. Emergency responders confirmed that survivors were evacuated and taken for medical treatment following the incident.
The attack has renewed concerns over recurring insecurity in Plateau State, where rural communities have continued to face violent attacks. Community leaders have called for stronger security presence and faster intervention to protect residents.
Security agencies have been mobilized to respond to the situation and begin investigations into the attackers. Authorities have also urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions, stressing the need for cooperation with security personnel.
