Arsenal are reportedly preparing to send Ethan Nwaneri out on loan again before the transfer window closes, despite previously being open to permanent offers for the highly rated England Under-21 attacker. Interest has emerged from clubs including AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Fulham.
The decision could say more about Arsenal’s long-term plans for Nwaneri than his recent lack of playing time.
Rather than cashing in on a player who has attracted serious interest across Europe, the club appear to believe that regular football is more valuable to his development right now.
Arsenal Still Believe in Nwaneri
Nwaneri’s situation is unusual because there is little doubt about his talent. Arsenal handed him his senior debut as a 15-year-old, making him the youngest player to appear in the Premier League. But talent alone does not guarantee minutes at a club competing for major trophies.
Arteta has previously explained the thinking behind sending Nwaneri to Marseille, saying young players need regular minutes when they are not getting enough opportunities at Arsenal.
That same logic appears to be driving the latest decision. Arsenal’s squad is now packed with experienced and expensive options, making it difficult for a teenager to get the consistent starts he needs.
The Marseille Loan Did Not Go Exactly to Plan
Nwaneri’s previous loan at Marseille was supposed to accelerate his development, but the move was complicated by changes at the French club.
He made only limited appearances, meaning he did not get the regular playing time Arsenal originally wanted for him. Arteta nevertheless said the youngster returned from France a more mature player.
That makes the next destination extremely important. Arsenal cannot simply send him somewhere because the club has a good name. They need a team willing to put Nwaneri on the pitch regularly and give him responsibility.
Dortmund, Milan or Fulham?
The list of interested clubs gives Arsenal several different options. Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have strong reputations for developing young players, while AC Milan could offer Nwaneri exposure to another major European league.
Fulham would present a different opportunity. Staying in England could make the transition easier and give him Premier League experience without requiring another adjustment to a foreign country.
The key question is therefore not where can Nwaneri go? It is where can Nwaneri actually play?
Why Arsenal Are Choosing a Loan
A permanent sale could bring Arsenal significant money, particularly with major European clubs interested. Reports have previously indicated that Dortmund and other clubs have considered substantial offers.
Yet keeping control of Nwaneri makes sense if Arsenal genuinely believe he can become an important first-team player. The club have already shown this approach with his previous loan, which had no option to buy.
This time, Arsenal appear to be making the same message even clearer. They would rather risk losing a season of immediate squad depth than risk losing a potential star permanently.
For Nwaneri, however, the next loan has to work. At 19, another season spent mostly watching from the bench could become more damaging than beneficial.
