Marvel has given fans another reason to start counting down to Avengers: Doomsday, and this time, it is not another mysterious trailer shot or a cryptic poster.
New images from the film are putting some of the biggest names from the original X-Men movies back in the spotlight, including Ian McKellen as Magneto and James Marsden as Cyclops. Channing Tatum also appears to be back as Gambit, while the wider cast includes Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer and Alan Cumming. Marvel’s official cast list confirms the return of these veteran X-Men actors alongside the Avengers and Fantastic Four casts.
The bigger story is that Marvel is not simply introducing new versions of these characters. It is bringing back many of the actors fans already associate with them.
Ian McKellen Is Back as Magneto
Seeing Sir Ian McKellen back as Magneto may be one of the biggest nostalgia plays in the entire movie. McKellen first played the mutant leader in the original X-Men films, beginning with the 2000 movie. More than two decades later, Marvel is bringing his version of Erik Lehnsherr into the MCU.
The new images show McKellen in both ordinary clothing and Magneto’s armoured appearance, suggesting that the character will have more than a brief cameo.And there is something particularly strange about seeing McKellen’s Magneto standing in the same Marvel universe as characters such as Thor, Captain America and Doctor Doom.
James Marsden Returns as Cyclops
James Marsden is also returning as Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops. Marsden’s Cyclops was one of the central figures in the early X-Men movies, but the character was eventually killed off before the franchise moved into its later timelines.
His return creates another major question: what exactly happened to the original X-Men universe?
Marvel has not explained how these characters fit into the MCU’s current reality, but the multiverse gives the studio plenty of room to bring different versions of familiar characters together. The film is officially described as bringing heroes from three different universes into conflict.
Channing Tatum Finally Gets His Gambit Moment
Then there is Channing Tatum. Tatum’s Gambit has been one of the strangest long-running stories in modern superhero casting. He was attached to a Gambit movie for years, but the project never made it to cinemas.
Now, after appearing as the character in Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum is officially part of the Doomsday cast. The new material appears to show Gambit in a darker outfit and headband, giving fans a better idea of how he may look when he joins the larger X-Men group.
Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer and Alan Cumming
Marvel is not stopping with Magneto and Cyclops. Patrick Stewart returns as Professor X, bringing back one of the most recognisable performances from the original franchise. Rebecca Romijn is also back as Mystique, while Kelsey Grammer returns as Beast. Alan Cumming will once again play Nightcrawler.
These returns are important because they make the X-Men presence feel less like a cameo collection and more like a reunion of the original team. Marvel has already confirmed the actors alongside its huge MCU ensemble, which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd and others.
Marvel Is Turning Nostalgia Into the Story
That may ultimately be what makes Avengers: Doomsday different from a normal Avengers movie. Marvel is not simply assembling superheroes. It is bringing together different generations of superhero cinema.
The original X-Men actors helped establish the modern superhero movie era. The MCU later built an even larger cinematic universe on top of that foundation. Now, those two histories are being placed in the same film.
That means the biggest question may not be who wins against Doctor Doom. It may be whether Marvel can make all these familiar faces feel like part of one meaningful story rather than simply putting every popular character in the same movie.
With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for December 18, 2026, fans will have to wait a little longer to find out.
