The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered an immediate crackdown on illegal street car racing in Abuja’s residential neighborhoods, saying the activity puts lives and property at risk.
Speaking after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects on Monday, Wike said motorists had turned some of the capital’s newly constructed roads into racing tracks, performing high-speed runs and dangerous stunts. He stressed that while people have the right to enjoy the roads, that right must not endanger other residents.
The FCT Minister directed the territory’s traffic management authorities to begin enforcing the ban immediately, adding that organised car racing should only take place in designated locations rather than residential communities. He noted that although no formal complaints had reached his office before now, the administration would not wait for a tragedy before acting.
Wike added that the restriction applies to residential areas, while motorsport activities should be confined to approved venues where they do not pose a danger to the public.
