RC Lens have sacked German manager Dino Toppmöller after only six official matches, making him the first manager dismissed in Europe’s top five leagues during the 2026/27 season. His league record was one win, one draw and two defeats.
The decision is striking because Toppmöller’s spell began with one of the biggest wins in the club’s recent history. Lens defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 to win the Trophée des Champions, the first time the club had lifted the trophy. Only weeks later, that promising start has been replaced by a coaching change.
Champions League Win Could Not Save Him
Toppmöller’s record was not entirely negative. Lens won three of his six matches, including a dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory away to Slavia Prague. Florian Thauvin and Ruben Aguilar scored late goals to complete the comeback.
However, the club’s league form became the deciding issue. Lens lost consecutive Ligue 1 matches against Strasbourg and Lorient before Toppmöller’s dismissal.
That contrast makes the decision more significant. Lens appear to be judging the new season primarily on their domestic ambitions rather than allowing early European success to cover up league problems.
Yannick Cahuzac Gets Immediate Test
Assistant coach Yannick Cahuzac is expected to take temporary charge, beginning with Friday’s trip to Monaco. The former Lens midfielder has reportedly been viewed internally as a possible future head coach, giving him an unexpected opportunity to make his case.
The bigger question is whether Lens can maintain their Champions League momentum while fixing their domestic form. The club finished second in Ligue 1 last season and won the Coupe de France before Toppmöller arrived, so expectations were already high.
For Toppmöller, the dismissal is a reminder of how quickly expectations can change in European football. Winning a major trophy and a Champions League match was not enough to buy him time once the league results started going the other way.
