The Ballon d’Or 2026 Coach of the Year nominees have been announced, and one country has dominated the shortlist.

Four of the five candidates are Spanish. Mikel Arteta, Luis de la Fuente, Unai Emery and Luis Enrique will compete with Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany for the award, which will be presented in London on October 26.

The unusual Spanish dominance is perhaps the biggest story from the Ballon d’Or Coach of the Year 2026 shortlist.

Spain Has Taken Over the Coaching Race

The four Spanish nominees have reached the shortlist through very different routes. Luis de la Fuente enters the race after leading Spain to World Cup glory. Luis Enrique is seeking another award after guiding Paris Saint-Germain to another Champions League triumph. Arteta brought the Premier League title back to Arsenal, while Emery led Aston Villa to the Europa League and a fourth-place finish in England.

That means the Spanish candidates are not being recognised for one particular style of football or one competition. They have produced major results at international and club level across several of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Kompany Is the Lone Outsider

Vincent Kompany is the only non-Spaniard among the Ballon d’Or 2026 Coach of the Year nominees. The former Manchester City captain has continued his rapid rise into elite management by leading Bayern Munich to a dominant Bundesliga campaign. Bayern also won the German Cup and Super Cup during the campaign.

His presence gives the award race an interesting contrast. Kompany represents a new generation of managers breaking through, while his four Spanish rivals reflect the strength of a coaching system that continues to produce managers capable of succeeding at the highest level.

Who Has the Strongest Case?

De la Fuente may have the strongest international case after Spain’s World Cup success, while Luis Enrique can point to another Champions League triumph with PSG.

Arteta’s Premier League title carries huge weight because Arsenal had spent years trying to reach the top of English football. Emery, meanwhile, added another European trophy to his already impressive record.

That makes the final vote difficult to predict. The winner will be announced at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on October 26. For now, though, the clearest message from the shortlist is that Spanish coaching is having a major moment on the world stage.
