Barcelona 5-0 Valencia win was another statement victory, but the biggest story may not have been the goals. The Rodri Barcelona debut gave Hansi Flick an early look at how his new midfielder can change the balance of the team.
Rodri started for the first time since joining Barcelona from Manchester City, and his calm presence in midfield allowed others to play with more freedom. Barcelona have now won all four of their Barcelona La Liga 2026/27 matches and sit top of the table with 12 points.
Rodri Gives Pedri More Freedom
Rodri’s value was not simply in keeping possession. His ability to read danger, recover the ball and control the tempo allowed Pedri to spend more time moving into attacking areas.
That balance could become one of Barcelona’s biggest advantages this season. Rodri completed 81 of his 83 passes, underlining the control he brought to the middle of the pitch.
Flick has previously relied heavily on Barcelona’s technical midfielders to control games. With Rodri behind them, Pedri and the attacking players can take more risks without leaving the team exposed.
It is still early, but the Rodri Barcelona debut suggests that Barcelona may have found the missing piece they wanted in midfield.
Yamal and Fermín Continue to Explode
The extra control behind them also gave Barcelona’s attackers room to cause problems.
Lamine Yamal vs Valencia ended with the teenager scoring twice, including Barcelona’s opening goal and a late fifth goal. Fermín López was equally important, scoring once and providing two assists. Raphinha and Pedri completed the scoring.
Fermín’s performance is particularly interesting. His energy and movement gave Barcelona another attacking threat between midfield and the forward line, while Yamal continued to show why he is becoming one of the team’s most important players.
Barcelona Are Already Setting the Pace
The result means Barcelona have scored 17 goals in their first four league matches, showing that their attack is not relying on one player to carry the team. Raphinha has also started the season strongly, while Yamal and Fermín are adding more goals from different areas of the pitch.
The timing makes the win even more significant. Real Madrid lost 1-0 to Real Betis on Friday, meaning Barcelona took advantage and moved three points clear at the top.
For now, the biggest question is not whether Barcelona can score goals. They clearly can. The question is whether Rodri can give them the control and defensive balance needed to maintain this level when they face stronger opposition. If Sunday was an early indication, Barcelona may have added much more than a big-name midfielder.
