Troy Parrott Ends Mourinho’s Perfect Start as Real Madrid Fall to Betis

Real Madrid’s perfect start to the La Liga season is over, and the man responsible has a surprising connection to José Mourinho. Troy Parrott, the striker Mourinho handed his Tottenham debut in 2019, came off the bench to score the winner as Real Betis beat Madrid 1-0.

The defeat was Mourinho’s first since returning to Real Madrid, but the result was also a reminder that dominating a match means little if a team cannot finish its chances.

Parrott Punishes Madrid Late

Madrid created enough opportunities to win the game, with Vinícius Júnior hitting the post and Kylian Mbappé striking the crossbar. Yet Betis remained in the contest and found their moment in the 81st minute.

Parrott had entered the game in the 68th minute. When Thibaut Courtois saved a header, the Irish striker reacted quickest to the rebound and fired Betis ahead. It was his first goal for the club and one of the biggest moments of his career.

The goal also created an unusual football storyline. Six years after Mourinho gave Parrott his Tottenham debut, the forward returned to haunt the same manager on a much bigger stage.

Mbappé Had the Chance to Rescue Madrid

Real Madrid still had opportunities to escape with a point. Carlos Espí appeared to have equalised with an acrobatic finish, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside. Madrid then received a penalty deep into stoppage time after Vinícius was fouled in the box.

Mbappé stepped up, but Álvaro Valles saved the penalty to preserve Betis’ victory. The result leaves both Real Madrid and Real Betis on nine points after four matches, while Barcelona can move clear if they win their game in hand.

A Warning for Mourinho

The Mourinho first Real Madrid defeat should not automatically trigger concern about Madrid’s season. The team created plenty of chances and reportedly recorded 3.16 expected goals without scoring.

But the loss exposes an issue Mourinho will want fixed quickly. Madrid cannot afford to dominate games and repeatedly leave opponents alive, especially with the Champions League campaign beginning next week.

For Betis, however, this is more than three points. They have now shown again that they can frustrate one of Spain’s biggest clubs, while Parrott has given himself a memorable introduction to life in Seville.
