The latest Victor Osimhen injury has created concern for both Galatasaray and Nigeria after the striker was forced off during Friday’s 3-2 win over Istanbul Başakşehir.
The timing makes the injury particularly important. Osimhen had just scored his sixth goal of the season before leaving the pitch in the first half, with his fitness now under scrutiny ahead of Galatasaray’s Champions League campaign and Nigeria’s upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
Osimhen Scored Before the Injury
The Victor Osimhen Galatasaray injury came after an impressive start to the match. Osimhen opened the scoring in the 16th minute, continuing a strong run of form that has seen him become one of Galatasaray’s most important attacking players. He later appeared to feel discomfort after a run and signalled to the bench that he could not continue.
The 27-year-old was replaced by Barış Alper Yılmaz in the 33rd minute. Reports indicate that Osimhen appeared to be dealing with a muscle or groin problem, although the full extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed.
Galatasaray eventually won 3-2 through a late Gabriel Sara free-kick, but the victory was overshadowed by concerns about their leading striker.
Champions League Test Comes Quickly
The Osimhen injury update is especially important because Galatasaray’s next major test comes within days.
Galatasaray are scheduled to face Sporting CP in the Champions League on September 9. Osimhen’s absence would leave Okan Buruk with an immediate attacking problem after the Nigerian had scored six league goals in his first four matches.
Even if the injury is not serious, Galatasaray may have to decide whether risking Osimhen so soon after the knock is worthwhile.
Nigeria Also Has Reason to Worry
The injury is not only a club concern. Nigeria coach Eric Chelle is preparing for the Super Eagles’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month. Osimhen’s availability could therefore affect Nigeria’s plans.
There is at least one positive development for Chelle. Kelechi Iheanacho is enjoying a strong start with Bursaspor, while Moses Usor has also been producing goals and assists. Both players could strengthen Nigeria’s attacking options if Osimhen needs time to recover.
The Next Few Days Will Decide the Impact
For now, there is no confirmed indication that Osimhen will miss an extended period. Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk has suggested that he does not expect a lengthy absence, but further assessment will provide a clearer picture.
That leaves Galatasaray and Nigeria waiting for the same answer: how serious is the injury? A short recovery would make the incident little more than an early-season scare. A longer absence, however, could affect Galatasaray’s Champions League plans and force Nigeria to rethink its attack just weeks into a crucial international schedule.
