Balogun gave the hosts the lead just before halftime with his third goal of the tournament, putting Mauricio Pochettino’s side in control. However, the striker’s night took a dramatic turn midway through the second half when he was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a challenge on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemović. The dismissal means Balogun will miss the Round of 16 showdown against Belgium.
Despite playing with 10 men for much of the second half, the Americans held firm and doubled their advantage through Malik Tillman, whose superb free-kick sealed the victory and ensured Bosnia’s World Cup campaign came to an end. The result also marked the United States’ first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 2002, keeping alive hopes of a deep run on home soil.
