The humanitarian crisis in Venezuela continues to deepen after the country’s devastating twin earthquakes, with the official death toll rising to 1,430 as thousands of emergency workers from around the world intensify rescue operations.
Authorities say the powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, which struck just seconds apart earlier this week, have left widespread destruction across coastal communities, particularly in La Guaira, where hundreds of buildings collapsed and critical infrastructure suffered extensive damage.
The European Union has deployed more than 520 specialist emergency responders from countries including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic to assist local rescue teams searching for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Their arrival adds to international assistance already provided by teams from the United States, Mexico, Colombia and several Latin American nations.
Officials estimate that more than 68,000 people remain unaccounted for, although humanitarian agencies caution that many of those listed as missing may eventually be reunited with their families as communications are gradually restored. Search-and-rescue efforts remain focused on the hardest-hit communities, where aftershocks continue to complicate operations.
Despite the tragedy, rescuers have reported several remarkable survival stories. Over the weekend, emergency crews successfully pulled multiple survivors, including children and entire families, from the rubble days after the disaster, offering moments of hope amid the devastation.
Hospitals across the affected regions remain overwhelmed as thousands of injured residents continue receiving treatment. Temporary shelters have been established for displaced families, while humanitarian organizations are distributing food, water, medical supplies and emergency relief.
