Ayyoub Bouaddi: Manchester City Spend €100 Million on Teenager to Rebuild Midfield After Rodri

Ayyoub Bouaddi is on his way to Manchester to complete his Manchester City transfer from Lille, with the Premier League champions agreeing a deal worth up to €100 million for the 18-year-old midfielder.

City will reportedly pay €95 million up front, with another €5 million available in add-ons. Bouaddi is expected to undergo his medical before signing a five-year contract. The deal would make him the most expensive teenager in Premier League history.

But the size of the Ayyoub Bouaddi transfer tells only part of the story. City are spending heavily because their midfield has entered a major rebuilding phase.

Why Manchester City want Bouaddi

Bouaddi is primarily a defensive midfielder who can also operate deeper in midfield. He impressed for Morocco at the 2026 World Cup, starting five of their six matches as they reached the quarter-finals.

His rise has been unusually quick. He made his senior Lille debut at just 16 and has already accumulated significant first-team experience despite his age. During the 2025/26 season, he made 30 Ligue 1 appearances as Lille finished third and qualified for the Champions League.

That experience appears to have convinced City that he can become more than a long-term prospect.

City are rebuilding after Rodri

The Manchester City midfield looks very different from the one that dominated English football in recent years.

Rodri has left for Barcelona, while Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders are also no longer part of the midfield group. City responded by spending £116 million on Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest before moving for Bouaddi.

That means City are not simply replacing one player. They are rebuilding the structure of their midfield. Bouaddi may eventually become City’s Rodri replacement, but expecting an 18-year-old to immediately reproduce Rodri’s influence would be unrealistic. His arrival gives the club another technically gifted option while allowing him time to develop.

Almost €200 million shows City’s urgency

The spending is also a statement about City’s new direction. With the Bouaddi deal included, the club’s summer spending is approaching £200 million.

The question now is whether these expensive midfield additions can quickly restore City’s control of games. Bouaddi has the talent, but the pressure will be enormous. At €100 million, he will not arrive as an ordinary teenage project. He will arrive with expectations to become one of the foundations of Manchester City’s next generation.
