Lionel Messi has added an unexpected academic title to one of football’s greatest careers, receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires just hours before his expected final appearance for Argentina.
The University of Buenos Aires awarded Messi its highest honorary distinction, Doctor Honoris Causa, on Tuesday, October 6. The decision was approved unanimously and recognised not only his achievements in football but also his perseverance, humility and role in representing Argentina.
Why Argentina’s Top University Chose Messi
The Lionel Messi honorary doctorate is significant because the UBA made clear that the award was not simply about goals, trophies and records.
The university highlighted Messi’s leadership of Argentina during a remarkable period that included the 2021 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima, 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América. It also recognised his contribution to Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final.
UBA Rector Ricardo Gelpi said the institution wanted to recognise the person behind the statistics, describing Messi as a humble and persevering figure who has become an ambassador of Argentine culture and national identity.
From Footballer to National Symbol
The timing makes the Messi Doctor Honoris Causa award even more powerful. Messi is expected to make his final appearance for Argentina against Benin at the Monumental Stadium on October 6, bringing an end to a 21-year international career. FIFA confirmed the farewell match was arranged after Messi announced his international retirement.
That means the doctorate is effectively the first major tribute of a day built around saying goodbye to Argentina’s captain.
It also reflects how dramatically Messi’s relationship with Argentina has changed. Early in his international career, he faced criticism from fans who believed his performances for Barcelona did not translate to the national team. His eventual success with Argentina, particularly the 2021 Copa América and 2022 World Cup, transformed that relationship.
A Different Kind of Farewell
Lionel Messi’s farewell from Argentina is therefore about more than his final minutes on a football pitch.
The UBA ceremony gives Argentina a chance to honour Messi as a cultural figure before the stadium takes over later in the day. The message is clear: his influence is no longer measured only by what he achieved with a football.
For a player whose career was once defined by questions about whether he truly belonged in the heart of Argentine football, receiving the country’s highest university honour on his farewell day is a remarkable full-circle moment.
Messi may be leaving the Argentina shirt, but the country is making sure his legacy is formally recognised far beyond the game.
