Lionel Messi Retires from Argentina After 20 Years as Jorge Messi’s Death Shapes Final Decision

Lionel Messi has officially retired from the Argentina national team, bringing one of the greatest international careers in football history to an end. The 39-year-old announced the decision on August 31 after more than two decades representing his country.

As Lionel Messi retires from Argentina, this comes weeks after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final to Spain and shortly after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who was also his longtime representative.

Why Messi Decided to Retire

Messi revealed that he had already written his retirement message on July 21, two days after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat. However, the death of Jorge Messi on August 8 made him even more certain that it was time to leave international football.

The decision therefore appears to be about more than the disappointment of losing another World Cup final. Messi also pointed to his age, the physical demands of international football and the emergence of younger Argentine players. He said he had given everything he had to the national team and believed talented young players deserved their opportunity.

Messi Leaves After Finally Winning It All

The timing is striking because Messi’s relationship with Argentina was once defined by disappointment. He lost the 2014 World Cup final and several Copa América finals before finally winning the 2021 Copa América.

He then reached the peak of his international career by captaining Argentina to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He also won another Copa América and returned to the World Cup final in 2026. Messi leaves as Argentina’s record appearance holder and top scorer, with more than 200 international appearances and over 120 goals.

What Messi’s Retirement Means for Argentina

Argentina now faces the difficult task of replacing the player who has been at the centre of its attack and leadership for two decades. The immediate focus will be on which younger players can take greater responsibility. Messi himself acknowledged that a new generation is ready to step forward.

Importantly, Messi’s retirement from Argentina does not mean he has retired from football. He remains an Inter Miami player and continues his club career in MLS. For Argentina, however, an era has officially ended. Messi will now watch the national team from the outside, having already delivered the trophies that once seemed impossible.
