Infantino Will Seek a Fourth FIFA Term Despite Growing Opposition

FIFA president Gianni Infantino will seek re-election in March 2027, despite growing pressure from several of football’s biggest regional bodies. FIFA confirmed on Sunday that nothing has changed regarding Infantino’s plan to contest the election. If successful, the 56-year-old will remain FIFA president until 2031.

The decision is significant because Infantino is entering an election that looks very different from his previous campaigns. He was re-elected without opposition in 2019 and 2023, but this time his leadership is facing an unusually public challenge from powerful football confederations.

The World Cup Investment Plan Changed Everything

Much of the controversy centres on the now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise controversy. The proposed FFE would have brought private investment into FIFA’s commercial operations, including future World Cups and other competitions.

FIFA argued that the plan could unlock more commercial value and increase development funding for its 211 member associations. FIFA said its Forward funding could rise from $8 million per association to $20 million for the 2027 to 2030 cycle.

However, UEFA and other confederations strongly opposed the proposal. UEFA has also pursued legal steps in the United States to obtain documents connected to the plan, while considering further action in Switzerland. The proposal was eventually abandoned, but the political damage to Infantino has continued.

The Election Could Become a Battle for FIFA’s Power

The interesting part of the FIFA president election 2027 is that Infantino still has important support despite the opposition.

UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF have criticised his leadership, while African and South American football bodies remain among the regions where he retains significant backing. That could turn the election into a contest over which bloc has the greatest influence inside FIFA.

For now, Infantino is the only officially declared candidate. CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani has been mentioned as a possible challenger, but has not formally entered the race. Candidates must submit their nominations by November 18, while the election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco.

What to Expect

The next few months could determine whether the opposition can produce a serious alternative to Infantino.

If a strong challenger emerges, the election could become one of the most contested FIFA presidential races in years. If no major opponent appears, Infantino could still enter the March vote with a clear path to another term despite the controversy. For now, his message is simple: the pressure has not changed his plans.
