A rape allegation against Nigerian footballer Victor Ebele Jr has taken a dramatic turn after the woman who made the accusation publicly withdrew it and apologised to the player and his family.
Chioma Oniniwu, who accused the Singapore-based footballer in 2025, said in a new statement that Ebele did not rape her and accepted responsibility for the damage caused by her earlier claims.
The reversal now shifts attention from the original Victor Ebele Jr rape allegation to a bigger question: what happens to a person’s reputation when a serious accusation spreads online before the facts are fully established?
What Chioma Oniniwu Now Says
Oniniwu said she made the accusation while pregnant, frightened and overwhelmed by the situation she was facing.
According to her latest statement, she acted out of fear and “took the law into my own hands”. She apologised directly to Victor Ebele, his brother Frank and the wider Ebele family, saying her accusations caused pain, embarrassment and reputational damage.
She also asked people and media organisations to remove the earlier posts about the Victor Ebele rape accusation. The development is significant because her latest account directly contradicts the allegation she made publicly in 2025.
What Happened Before the Retraction?
The dispute began when Oniniwu accused Ebele on X and alleged that he had raped and impregnated her. She also claimed that members of his family were protecting him.
She later said she had gone to a police station in Gwarinpa, Abuja, to report the alleged incident but felt she was not properly heard.
The matter resurfaced in August 2026 after Oniniwu was arrested on August 26, charged and later released on bail, according to the information surrounding the case. Her latest statement has now changed the direction of the story completely.
The Bigger Issue Is Online Accusations
As Chioma Oniniwu retracts the rape allegation, it has already divided public opinion. Some people are focusing on her admission and calling for accountability over the impact of the original accusation. Others are warning against using one person’s retraction to dismiss the seriousness of genuine sexual assault allegations.
For Ebele, however, the immediate issue is likely reputation. Even when an accusation is withdrawn, screenshots and old posts can continue circulating online.
The case is another reminder that serious allegations should be handled through proper investigative and legal channels, while the public should be careful about treating unverified social media claims as established facts.
