The 2026 Headies Awards have officially entered the next stage after organisers released the nominations for the 18th edition, with some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars competing alongside a strong group of younger artistes.
Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and Omah Lay are among the major names in the Headies nominations, but one of the biggest stories from the list is the growing challenge from a younger generation led by Fola and Mavo.
The ceremony is scheduled for October 25 in Toronto, Canada, under the theme “Africa to the World.”
Fola Gives the Big Names Something to Think About
One of the biggest surprises in the Headies nominees in 2026 is Fola, who leads the nominations with 10. The rising singer’s debut album Catharsis earned recognition in major categories including Album of the Year, Best R&B Album and Best Recording of the Year. His song “You” is also competing for Song of the Year, Afrobeats Single of the Year and other major awards.
Omah Lay follows with eight nominations, while Mavo and Wizkid each have seven. Davido and Asake have six nominations apiece. This creates an interesting balance for this year’s awards. The established Afrobeats giants still have a major presence, but the nominations suggest that the next generation is becoming harder to ignore.
Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy Still Have Plenty at Stake
The presence of Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy means the biggest names in Nigerian music are still central to the Headies conversation.
Wizkid is nominated for Best Male Artiste alongside Burna Boy, Davido’s “With You” collaboration with Omah Lay appears in several major categories, and Burna Boy is also competing for some of the ceremony’s biggest honours.
For Davido and Omah Lay, “With You” could become one of the night’s biggest winners. The song is nominated for Song of the Year, Afrobeats Single of the Year, Best Recording of the Year, Best Collaboration, Viewers’ Choice and Music Video of the Year.
The Headies Is Going Global Again
The decision to hold the 2026 Headies Awards in Toronto is also part of the bigger story. The awards previously moved to Atlanta for two editions before returning to Lagos in 2025. This time, organisers are positioning Toronto as another step in taking African music to an international audience.
The event will also include a trade and investment summit, creative events and a live awards ceremony, making the week about more than trophies. With the theme “Africa to the World”, the Headies is clearly trying to match the global reach of Afrobeats itself.
Who Will Take Home the Biggest Awards?
The nominations have created several interesting battles, particularly in Best Male Artiste, Best Female Artiste, Album of the Year and Next Rated.
Fola’s strong showing could make him one of the night’s biggest winners, while established stars such as Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy will be looking to add another major award to their careers.
