Rodri’s reported decision to choose Barcelona over Real Madrid has turned one of the summer’s biggest transfer battles on its head. After weeks of talks with Madrid, the Manchester City midfielder has reportedly informed the Spanish giants that his preference is now Barcelona, with personal terms understood to be in place and negotiations with City moving forward.
For Barcelona, this is about much more than signing another midfielder. The club desperately needs control in the middle of the pitch, particularly with Frenkie de Jong’s injury situation creating uncertainty. Hansi Flick has reportedly pushed for Rodri because of his ability to dictate games, provide defensive protection and bring leadership to a midfield that could benefit enormously from his experience.
If Barcelona can complete the deal, Rodri could become the player around whom Flick builds his midfield. And there is an obvious psychological element too. Real Madrid were supposed to be the natural destination.
Rodri is Spanish, has previously spoken positively about Madrid and had been the subject of extended negotiations with the club. Real Madrid had also been working towards a potential deal, making Barcelona’s late move particularly significant.
Barcelona potentially taking him from under Madrid’s nose would therefore represent more than a transfer victory. It would be a statement that the Catalan club can still compete for elite players when the sporting project is convincing.
The financial side, however, remains the biggest hurdle. Rodri has only one year remaining on his Manchester City contract, and reports suggest City could be willing to accept a fee in the region of €60m–€70m. Barcelona will have to structure the deal carefully while also accommodating the midfielder’s salary demands.
For City, the situation is equally important. Losing a player of Rodri’s importance would leave a major hole in Pep Guardiola’s midfield, although the club could still benefit financially rather than risk losing him for nothing later.
For Madrid, meanwhile, the twist could force a rethink. The club has already invested heavily elsewhere this summer, while Rodri’s reported choice means Madrid may have to decide whether to return with a stronger offer or move on to another midfield solution.
The biggest winner could ultimately be Barcelona. If they land Rodri, they are not simply signing a star. They are potentially changing the balance of power in Spanish football.
