Juventus are pushing to sign Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee, with the Dutchman reportedly open to returning to Serie A after just two years at Old Trafford.
Talks between the clubs and Zirkzee’s representatives are ongoing, with Juventus exploring a loan arrangement. United, however, are looking for more than simply sending the 25-year-old away for a season. Their preferred options are reportedly a permanent transfer or a loan that includes an obligation to buy. That detail could be the most important part of the story.
Zirkzee arrived at United from Bologna in 2024 after an impressive season in Italy, with the club paying a reported £36.5 million for him. He scored on his debut against Fulham, but his time at Old Trafford has never developed into the consistent attacking role many expected. Now, United appear ready to draw a line under the experiment.
The willingness to consider a loan suggests the club recognises that Juventus could provide Zirkzee with the environment to rebuild his confidence and rediscover the form that made him attractive in the first place. But insisting on an obligation to buy also suggests United do not want another season of uncertainty followed by another transfer saga.
Zirkzee already knows Serie A. His best football came at Bologna, where his ability to link play, carry the ball and operate between the lines made him one of the league’s most interesting forwards. Returning to Italy could give him a tactical environment much closer to the one in which he previously thrived.
There is also a financial calculation for both clubs. A loan allows Juventus to avoid immediately committing to a significant transfer fee, while United can potentially protect the value of a player they spent heavily to acquire. But the two clubs still have to agree on the structure of the deal, with Juventus reportedly preferring greater flexibility while United want stronger guarantees of a permanent exit.
For United, the bigger issue is what comes next. If Zirkzee leaves, the club cannot simply treat the transfer as removing a squad player. They will need enough attacking depth for a full season, particularly if their plans involve competing across multiple competitions. That makes the timing important.
United have already invested heavily in reshaping their attack, and allowing Zirkzee to leave would represent another admission that the previous recruitment plan did not produce the desired outcome.
For Zirkzee, though, Juventus could represent something different. It’s not an escape from football, but a chance to restart his career in the league where he first proved he belonged at the highest level.
The transfer may ultimately benefit everyone, only if United gets a permanent commitment, Juventus gets the striker they want, and Zirkzee gets the opportunity to become the player United hoped they were buying.
