Arsenal have agreed a £75 million deal with Newcastle for captain Bruno Guimarães, with the Brazilian midfielder now set to undergo a medical before completing his move to North London.
For Arsenal, however, this is about more than simply adding another big-name midfielder. It could fundamentally change the number of midfield combinations available to Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal already have Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi competing for the deeper midfield role, while Martin Ødegaard remains central to their attacking structure. Guimarães gives Arteta another player capable of operating as a No. 6 or No. 8, meaning Arsenal can rotate without dramatically changing the quality or style of their midfield. That matters over a long season.
Arsenal are trying to compete across the Premier League, Champions League and domestic competitions, and one of their biggest challenges has been maintaining intensity and quality when key players are unavailable or need rest. Guimarães’ arrival gives Arteta the option to change personnel without necessarily weakening the midfield. There is also an interesting possibility involving Rice.
Rather than viewing Guimarães as competition for the England international, Arsenal could use the pair together. Rice’s ability to cover ground and drive forward could complement Guimarães’ ball retention, passing and defensive aggression. In certain matches, Zubimendi could provide the deeper control while Guimarães operates further forward. That gives Arteta several different answers to different opponents.
Against teams that sit deep, Guimarães can add another midfielder capable of progressing the ball and creating opportunities. Against stronger opponents, his defensive work and experience in the Premier League could allow Arsenal to field a more physically imposing midfield.
And there is another important factor: Guimarães knows the Premier League.
The 28-year-old has made more than 150 league appearances for Newcastle since arriving from Lyon in 2022 and became a key figure in their rise, including their 2025 League Cup success. He is not a player Arsenal need to wait months to adapt to the physical demands of English football.
The £75m price tag is substantial, but Arsenal are buying something increasingly valuable at the highest level: options. Arteta can now change his midfield without necessarily changing his ambitions. The real question is how he uses that depth.
If Guimarães settles quickly, Arsenal could have one of the deepest midfield groups in the Premier League, and that could be particularly important when the season reaches the stage where title contenders are separated not by their best XI, but by the quality of their second and third choices.
For Arsenal, this transfer is therefore less about finding one more starter. It is about making the entire midfield harder to break.
