Iran, Oman and Saudi Arabia have stepped up diplomatic efforts to strengthen regional security and maritime cooperation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as Gulf nations seek to safeguard one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes. The discussions come amid efforts to maintain stability following months of heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate talks with his Saudi and Omani counterparts, focusing on maritime security, freedom of navigation and closer regional coordination. The three countries reaffirmed the importance of diplomacy and cooperation in protecting commercial shipping and preventing further instability in the Gulf.
The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of the world’s seaborne oil trade, making its security critical to global energy markets. While discussions have centred on expanding regional cooperation, Iran has maintained that responsibility for managing the waterway should remain with regional states.
