Aston Villa have completed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea on a season-long loan, with the deal including a conditional obligation to buy that could become permanent if agreed appearance-related targets are met. The total package is expected to be worth around £40–50 million, matching Chelsea’s valuation of the Argentine winger.
The 22-year-old joined Chelsea from Manchester United for £40 million last summer but struggled to establish himself at Stamford Bridge. Garnacho made 43 appearances, scoring eight goals in a difficult campaign that saw his confidence dip amid fierce competition for places. With first-team opportunities expected to remain limited, both player and club agreed that a move would be the best solution.
Villa manager Unai Emery welcomed the signing, praising the winger’s talent and enthusiasm for the project.
“We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project,” Emery said after the deal was confirmed.
Garnacho also expressed his excitement, revealing that conversations with Emery convinced him Villa Park was the ideal place to rebuild his confidence.
“I was looking for a club that could give me confidence and help me become the player I was during my first years at Manchester United,” he said, adding that the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League was another major attraction.
The Argentina international will wear the No. 17 shirt, the same number he previously sported at Manchester United and with the national team. His arrival comes as Villa prepare for another demanding season that includes both Premier League and Champions League football.
The structure of the transfer is also significant. Rather than completing an immediate permanent deal, Villa and Chelsea opted for a loan with a conditional obligation to buy due to UEFA financial sustainability regulations following the clubs’ recent high-profile business involving Morgan Rogers. The arrangement allows both clubs greater flexibility while remaining compliant with financial rules.
Villa supporters will now hope Emery can unlock the form that once made Garnacho one of the Premier League’s brightest young attackers.
