China has confirmed that Chinese-born American seismologist Dr. Youlin Chen remains in detention on espionage charges, rejecting U.S. claims that he has been wrongfully detained. Chen has been held since November 2024, when he was arrested at Beijing International Airport during a personal visit to China.
Chen, a U.S. citizen and Boston-based scientist, is known for his research on using seismic data to detect underground nuclear tests, including those conducted by North Korea.
His work, funded by the U.S. government and carried out using publicly available data, has been described by his family and supporters as purely scientific. However, Chinese authorities have charged him with espionage, and his case is expected to proceed behind closed doors.
His wife, Yufang Rong, says she has been unable to speak with him for more than 600 days and fears for his health. The U.S. State Department has designated Chen as wrongfully detained, a classification reserved for cases receiving high-level diplomatic attention.
President Donald Trump reportedly raised the matter directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping during talks in May, but there has been no breakthrough. China insists the case is being handled in accordance with its laws and has rejected accusations of wrongful detention.
