Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have gathered momentum after Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu unveiled a 25-player squad for the tournament in Morocco, while the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) approved the creation of two new domestic competitions aimed at expanding the country’s football ecosystem.
Madugu’s squad is led by captain Rasheedat Ajibade and includes experienced stars such as Chiamaka Nnadozie, Asisat Oshoala, Jennifer Echegini, Michelle Alozie, Toni Payne, Esther Okoronkwo and Francisca Ordega. Nigeria, the defending champions and record 10-time winners, will be aiming for an 11th WAFCON title when the tournament kicks off in Morocco from July 26 to August 16.
Away from the national team, the NFF Executive Committee has approved the establishment of a National Beach Soccer League and a National Futsal League. The initiative is designed to broaden football development across the country, create more opportunities for players and coaches, and strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness in FIFA-recognized formats beyond traditional 11-a-side football.
The federation believes the new competitions will help discover fresh talent, improve grassroots participation and position Nigeria to compete more effectively in continental and global beach soccer and futsal tournaments. Combined with the Super Falcons’ title defense, the developments mark a significant period for Nigerian football as the country looks to expand its influence across multiple disciplines.
