NGX Adds ₦9.3 Trillion in Seven-Day Rally as S&P Eyes Frontier Market Upgrade

ngx 9.3 trillion naira rally

The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) has recorded one of its strongest rallies in recent history, with investors gaining more than ₦9.3 trillion during a remarkable seven-day buying spree that has reinforced confidence in the country’s capital market.

The sustained rally has been driven by strong demand for banking, industrial and energy stocks, pushing the NGX to outperform many of its global peers. Analysts attribute the surge to improving investor confidence, ongoing economic reforms, firmer oil prices, stronger corporate earnings expectations and a more stable foreign exchange market.

Adding to the positive momentum, S&P Dow Jones Indices has placed Nigeria on its 2027 Frontier Market Watchlist, signaling that the country is being considered for an upgrade from its current standalone market classification. The move reflects growing international recognition of Nigeria’s regulatory and capital market reforms, although S&P stressed that policy consistency and continued improvements in market accessibility will determine whether the upgrade is approved next year.

A successful reclassification would significantly boost Nigeria’s visibility among global institutional investors, potentially attracting fresh foreign portfolio inflows and increasing the country’s inclusion in frontier market investment indices. Market analysts believe the development could further strengthen investor sentiment if current reforms are sustained.

Despite the optimism, experts caution that maintaining the market’s momentum will depend on continued macroeconomic stability, lower inflation, exchange-rate stability and consistent implementation of government reforms. Investors are also closely watching the potential listing of major companies, including Dangote Refinery, which could further deepen the Nigerian capital market.
