Barcelona’s pursuit of João Cancelo is about more than simply bringing back a familiar face. It could provide the tactical flexibility the club has been missing ahead of the new season.
The Catalan giants are closing in on a deal worth around €10 million to sign the Portuguese international permanently from Al Hilal, with negotiations now in the final stages after the Saudi club approved his departure. Reports indicate Cancelo is expected to sign a two-year contract, with an option for a further season.
For Barcelona, the relatively modest fee represents a low-risk investment in a player who already understands the club’s system. During his loan spell last season, Cancelo became one of the team’s most trusted defenders, making 23 appearances, scoring two goals, and contributing to Barcelona’s successful La Liga campaign.
His biggest value, however, lies in his versatility.
Cancelo is naturally a right-back but is equally comfortable on the left, while also stepping into midfield when required. That ability gives manager Hansi Flick far more tactical freedom, especially during a season in which Barcelona will compete on multiple fronts.
The move also reflects Barcelona’s continued focus on smart spending. Instead of committing a significant transfer fee to a younger full-back, the club appears to have prioritized experience and proven quality at a fraction of the price once attached to Cancelo. Just a few years ago, the Portuguese defender was reportedly valued at close to €100 million while playing for Manchester City.
If the deal is completed, Barcelona will not only strengthen their defense but also add one of Europe’s most adaptable players to a squad aiming to defend its domestic crown and challenge in Europe.
For Cancelo, the transfer offers another opportunity to revive his career at a club where he has already shown he can thrive, while Barcelona get a player capable of solving several positional problems with one signing.
