Barcelona have been hit by worrying news in preseason after Roony Bardghji suffered a potentially serious knee injury in training. The 20-year-old reportedly went down without contact and was in significant pain, with further medical examinations needed before the club can determine the extent of the damage.
The biggest concern is Bardghji’s history. The Sweden international already suffered an ACL tear in May 2024 that kept him out for around 10 months. The possibility of another cruciate ligament problem therefore makes this more than an ordinary preseason injury. At this stage, however, Barcelona have not confirmed that he has suffered another ACL tear, so it would be premature to assume the worst.
That uncertainty is important. Bardghji’s Barcelona career has not yet fully taken off. After joining from Copenhagen in 2025, he made 26 appearances last season, although most came from the bench. He was still regarded as a young player with significant potential, making this summer particularly important for his development.
There was also a transfer angle. Barcelona had reportedly been considering offers for Bardghji, with clubs including Ajax showing interest as he looked for more regular playing time. Reports had suggested that his future at the club was uncertain even before the injury.
If the injury proves serious, those plans could disappear immediately. A player who was potentially going to leave Barcelona in search of minutes could instead spend months recovering. For the club, that creates a difficult situation: they may lose a potential transfer opportunity while also having to manage the player’s rehabilitation and long-term development.
It could also affect Barcelona’s squad planning. If Bardghji was part of the group of players expected to provide depth in the attacking positions, losing him could increase the pressure on the club to keep alternatives rather than allow another attacker to leave.
But perhaps the most important issue is Bardghji himself.
At just 20, another major knee injury could interrupt a crucial stage of his development. The priority now should therefore be getting an accurate diagnosis rather than rushing to conclusions based on the initial reports.
Barcelona fans may have to wait for the medical results before knowing whether this is a temporary scare or a major blow. For now, the worst-case scenario remains exactly that: a possibility, not a confirmed diagnosis.
