The abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State has entered a second month with families still waiting for answers, as Governor Seyi Makinde renews efforts to secure the safe return of the victims. The prolonged captivity has intensified public concern over security in the South-West and raised fresh questions about Nigeria’s response to school kidnappings.
The victims were abducted on May 15 from communities in Oriire Local Government Area, including Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota, after gunmen attacked schools and took pupils and teachers away. The incident has been described as one of the most disturbing security events in Oyo in recent years.
As the crisis reached the one-month mark, Governor Makinde met with families of the abducted pupils and teachers, assuring them that his administration was working with security agencies to bring the victims home safely. He said the state government remained committed to using every available option while avoiding actions that could endanger the rescue effort.
“This is a traumatic and depressing situation,” Makinde said while calling for continued cooperation between the state government and security agencies. He also appealed against blame-sharing, insisting that the priority remained the safe return of the child and their teachers.
The incident has triggered emotional reactions across the country, with parents and community members demanding urgent action. Reports indicate that the affected families have spent weeks living in uncertainty, all hoping for news about their loved ones.
The Oyo abduction has also intensified national debate about Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, especially the spread of mass kidnappings beyond traditional hotspots in the North.
