Nigeria has officially launched FreeTV, a new digital broadcasting platform that offers viewers access to more than 100 television channels without monthly subscription fees, marking a major milestone in the country’s long-delayed transition from analogue to digital television. The platform went live nationwide on June 17 as part of the Federal Government’s Digital Switch-Over (DSO) program.
According to government officials, FreeTV will provide Nigerians with access to national, regional, and state-owned channels covering news, sports, entertainment, education, children’s programming, and indigenous language content. The service will be available through satellite, terrestrial broadcasting, and a dedicated mobile application, allowing broader access across urban and rural communities.
The launch is being seen as a major step toward expanding digital inclusion and improving access to information and entertainment. Information and National Orientation Minister Mohammed Idris said the project represents the successful completion of a broadcasting reform that had faced years of delays and missed deadlines.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) revealed that more than 100 channels have already signed on to the platform, with dozens currently active. The regulator said the initiative is expected to create new opportunities for content creators, advertisers, and broadcasters while improving picture quality and audience measurement capabilities.
One of the key selling points of the platform is its affordability. Authorities say many households will not need to purchase new television sets, provided they have compatible digital receivers or decoders. This is expected to make the transition more accessible for millions of Nigerians.
