Manchester City’s move for Gerónimo Rulli looks like a straightforward goalkeeper transfer, but the more interesting story is the chain reaction behind it. City are working on a deal for the 34-year-old Marseille goalkeeper as James Trafford moves towards a £40 million transfer to Leeds United, with reports indicating that Rulli has already agreed personal terms on a two-year contract. City have also submitted an offer to Marseille, with negotiations reportedly centered around a relatively small difference in valuation.
The biggest clue is what City apparently want Rulli to do. This is not a move to replace their first-choice goalkeeper. Rulli is being lined up as experienced cover behind Gianluigi Donnarumma, which makes the signing much easier to understand.
City are effectively exchanging a 23-year-old goalkeeper who wants regular football for a veteran who already understands the demands of elite European football and is comfortable operating with the ball. Rulli made 39 appearances for Marseille last season and kept eight Ligue 1 clean sheets in 29 league games.
That is also why the move could be smarter than it initially looks. Trafford’s departure leaves City needing reliability rather than another developmental goalkeeper.
A young No. 2 would need minutes to develop, but that creates a difficult situation when Donnarumma is expected to play the overwhelming majority of important matches. Rulli has the experience to accept a secondary role while still being capable of stepping into the team if injuries or rotation demand it. His Argentina international experience adds another layer of security.
There is an amusing twist to the story too: Rulli has actually been on City’s books before. He joined the club during the 2016-17 period but never made a senior appearance before continuing his career elsewhere. Nearly a decade later, City could finally get the goalkeeper they once signed, except this time he would arrive as a World Cup-winning veteran rather than a prospect.
The move also explains why Trafford’s transfer has felt like it is waiting for another piece to fall into place. Reports have described the two deals as a transfer domino, with Rulli’s arrival allowing City to complete Trafford’s departure to Leeds. There is even another knock-on effect involving Torino and Lucas Perri, showing how one goalkeeper decision at City can influence several clubs across Europe.
For City, the real objective is squad balance. They are selling a valuable young asset for around £40 million and replacing him with an experienced backup at a fraction of that cost. If Rulli accepts his role and performs when called upon, City will have turned a potentially awkward goalkeeper situation into a clean piece of squad management.
