Arsenal have opened talks with Sporting CP over a potential move for Spanish right-back Ivan Fresneda as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the new season.
The 21-year-old has been on Arsenal’s radar for several years and is once again attracting interest after impressing in Portugal. Fresneda joined Sporting from Real Valladolid in 2023 for €9 million and has an €80 million release clause, although reports suggest a deal could be agreed for around £30 million.
Arsenal are believed to see Fresneda as quality competition and cover for Jurrien Timber and Ben White, with sporting director Andrea Berta leading discussions. While some reports claim negotiations are progressing quickly, others insist talks are still at an early stage and no agreement has been reached.
The Gunners remain keen on adding another versatile defender this summer, but Sporting are expected to be tough negotiators as they look to keep one of their promising young talents.
