Fresh concerns over Nigeria’s security situation have emerged after a serving Nigerian Army officer, Colonel Abdussalam A. Ude, was shot dead during an attempted kidnapping at his residence in the Kurudu area of Abuja. The incident has renewed debate over the growing reach of kidnappers, even within the Federal Capital Territory.
According to reports, the armed assailants stormed the officer’s home in an attempt to abduct him, but he resisted before being fatally shot. Colonel Ude, a military intelligence officer, was widely respected within the armed forces and was reportedly due for promotion to the rank of Brigadier General next year. Security operatives have since launched an investigation and intensified efforts to track down the attackers.
The killing comes amid continued concerns over rising kidnapping and violent attacks across parts of Nigeria, with residents and security experts calling for stronger measures to tackle insecurity in and around the nation’s capital.
