49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan Recovering After Serious Car Crash Ahead of Training Camp

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a car crash earlier this month, with the team confirming he will have a limited role as training camp begins this weekend.

The accident occurred on July 14 near Shanahan’s home in Northern California when his vehicle collided with an SUV. Although the injuries were described as non-life-threatening, the 45-year-old suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, a severe concussion and required more than 40 stitches to his face. He was treated at a local hospital before being discharged later the same day to continue his recovery at home.

Despite making progress, Shanahan is still experiencing concussion symptoms and has not been cleared to fully resume his coaching duties. As a result, assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the team’s coordinators will oversee day-to-day responsibilities while Shanahan remains involved in a limited capacity.

The 49ers announced the update on Friday as players reported for training camp in Santa Clara. The organisation also thanked emergency responders for their swift assistance following the crash and expressed confidence that Shanahan is on the road to recovery. Authorities said there was no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, and no citations were issued.

Shanahan is entering his 10th season as head coach of the 49ers and is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s top offensive minds. His temporary absence comes at a crucial time as San Francisco prepares for another Super Bowl push and begins installing its plans for the new campaign.

The news has prompted an outpouring of support from across the NFL, with players, coaches and fans wishing Shanahan a speedy recovery. While his workload will be restricted in the coming weeks, the expectation is that he will continue recovering with the aim of being ready for the start of the regular season in September.
