Sophia Momodu has opened up about one of the most difficult periods of her life at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, using her experience of becoming a mother outside marriage to discuss stigma, identity and the struggle many women face when trying to make their voices heard.

Momodu, who attended UNGA as a representative of the Precious Jewels Foundation, spoke during a panel on September 22, 2026. Her appearance comes as she continues to build a public identity around women’s empowerment and advocacy beyond her connection to Afrobeats star Davido.

Sophia Momodu Talks About Pregnancy and Public Judgment

During the panel, Momodu described herself as a pastor’s daughter who became pregnant outside marriage by a globally recognised musician. She said the experience left her struggling to find her voice for a long time despite the attention that came with being connected to a famous person.

Her account reflects a broader issue around how unmarried mothers can be judged in conservative societies. Pregnancy outside marriage can attract criticism from families, religious communities and the wider public, while women may also find themselves defined by the circumstances surrounding the birth of their children.

For Momodu, the challenge was complicated by the public nature of her relationship and the fact that her daughter’s father is one of Africa’s biggest music stars.

From Personal Experience to Advocacy

Momodu’s UNGA appearance also puts more attention on the work of the Precious Jewels Foundation, which she founded to support women and children.

The foundation has focused on issues including women’s empowerment, education, maternal support and assistance for vulnerable children. Momodu has previously spoken about her own experience with postpartum depression and how discussing it publicly eventually helped her confront the stigma surrounding women’s mental health.

Her participation at UNGA therefore represents a shift in how her public story is being presented. Rather than simply being discussed through her relationship with Davido, she is increasingly appearing in spaces connected to advocacy, entrepreneurship and women’s issues.

She had announced ahead of the General Assembly that she would participate as a delegate representing the Precious Jewels Foundation.

Why Her UNGA Appearance Matters

Momodu’s story is particularly relevant because personal experiences often become the starting point for advocacy. Her account connects pregnancy stigma, motherhood and women’s ability to speak openly about difficult experiences.

Her earlier work has followed a similar pattern. In an interview with Marie Claire Nigeria, she explained how her experience with postpartum depression influenced the creation of the Precious Jewels Foundation and encouraged her to speak more openly about issues affecting women.

That makes her appearance at the United Nations less about celebrity access and more about how public figures can use personal experiences to enter wider conversations about social issues.

Online reactions to her UNGA appearance have been mixed, with supporters praising her for building an identity around advocacy while some discussions have continued to focus on her past relationship with Davido.

For Momodu, however, the appearance gives her an opportunity to shift the conversation toward the issues she says matter to her, particularly women, children and the stigma surrounding difficult life experiences.
